The National Hispanic Cultural Center's torreón is named after its patron, state senator Manny Aragón. The senator was a long-serving and powerful force in both Albuquerque's heavily Hispanic South Valley and the state's Roundhouse. The center itself is run under the auspices of the state's Office of Cultural Affairs, which also oversees state monuments—such as that at Lincoln.

The center's torreón, like Pedro Romero's tower in Santa Fe, is only a referent and not a reconstruction. But the Manny Aragón Torreón also represents another shift away from an original archaeological feature. The Barelas neighborhood has a long history dating back to early Spanish settlement in the region; but it is not named for a torreón. No watchtower is known to have stood nearby. The center's torreó could be thought of as a physically unattached icon. It is grounded in ideas rather than the authenticity of place.
